Seahawks visited by federal agents
Along with preparing for a tough game against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Seahawks received some unexpected visitors Sunday in Kansas City. Seattle, along with San Francisco (in New Jersey) and Tampa Bay (in Washington D.C.) were each visited by representatives of the DEA.
An inquiry into the details by The News Tribune resulted in acknowledgement, but not much more.
“The Seahawks can confirm that we received a visit from the DEA today,” the team’s public-relations staff said.
Reports are the visits were part of investigation in to a 2014 federal lawsuit filed by former NFL players alleging team doctors and trainers were distributing painkillers illegally to help mask pain. With many speculating that the DEA was specifically looking into the teams' adherence to the federal Controlled Substance Act which requires only a licensed physician or nurse practitioner can distribute prescription drugs, but more importantly, only within that physician or nurse practitioner’s geographic area of practice.
An NFL spokesperson issued a statement to ESPN stating, “Our teams cooperated with the DEA today and we have no information to indicate that irregularities were found.”
