The deal is pending physicals but a family member confirms that Michael Pineda has been told that he has been traded to the Yankees. The Mariners lose their ace in training but gain a young power bat, Jesus Montero, that they desperately need. The Mariners reportedly are also sending young pitching prospect Jose Campos and in return will get Hector Noesi.
My immediate reaction is this is a lot to give up. I am not saying that the Mariners have lost the trade. Montero is a prized prospect. A prized hitting prospect. A guy who has a chance to be special. You could say the same of Michael Pineda. That said, you may be able to say the same about Danny Hultzen or Taijuan Walker some day soon. If the Mariners didn't get enough for their prized guy they at worst got nearly enough and most importantly got what they needed.
I am not sure why they didn't stop there. Jose Campos is a very nice pitching prospect, still years away from the big leagues but an arm that many in the organization were very excited about. I am the first to say don't count your prospects before they are hatched but again, why not straight up for the principals?
In Montero the Mariners pick up a legitimate middle of the order bat who hopefully will progress alongside Justin Smoak. They have a guy that will be under club control for the next six years. We don't know where he will play. He is a catcher but has had issues behind the plate. Many scouts have him pegged as a DH/1B. The Yankees were planning on dh'ing him this year while working on the catching on the side in hopes of transitions him back behind the plate in a year. That plan could work here or the Mariners could elect throw him behind the plate right away. He will be of more value to the club if he can catch and with a younger team he very well could be given the opportunity to do it every day.
I will write a little more about Pineda later. On the field I had concerns about his development as his numbers dropped in the second half and the change up failed to materialize. I have little doubt he was going to figure it out but the question was, how long would it take. Off the field he will be sorely missed. He was a favorite interview subject and his attitude and enthusiasm was infectious. It will be tough for him to leave an organization that was like family to him, literally, he lived with bullpen coach Jaime Navarro, but when the dust settles he will be thrilled to be a Yankee. Pitching against the Yankees for the first time last year was one of the highlights of his year. He lit up when he talked about New York. I am excited for him but wonder how he will do in Yankee Stadium. We shall see.
As for the Mariners, the rotation is a big question mark right now. They do not have a true number 2. Noesi could pitch out of the pen or in the rotation. Will Hultzen or Paxton make the team out of spring training? Is Zduriencik done? After the Iwakuma signing Zduriencik said he still had his eyes open for starting pitching. He did beef up the bullpen which will help. It seems like another move could be coming.
