Emptying the Noggin
• This was a heck of a lot of fun. Amazing crowd. Insane atmosphere. Hard fought. Tough battle. All the things you love to see in an NBA game.
• Dallas is the best late game team in the NBA. There record over the last three years in games decided by 3 or less is staggering. I believe they were something on the line of 25-5. They got one tonight and you could see why. They worked every offensive possession to its max and got great shots. On the flip side the Jazz didn’t get good possessions on the offensive end in the final 3:00 minutes
• Gordon Hayward got a dunk with 2:47 left to tie the game. From that moment on the Dallas Mavericks did what the NBA champs do. They turned on the screws they played perfectly. They won. This is the difference of where the Mavericks are and the Jazz. But take a moment to remember never for one moment did we ever believe this team was going to be able to battle NBA champs in that setting.
• The Jazz were down 12 and they could have rolled but this team simply won’t do that. They fight, they battle and they stay in games. The defense forced 12 second half turnovers, 7 in the third quarter. They held the Mavericks to 12 3rd quarter points. They stood up for themselves and they fought.
• Dallas really decided they wanted to take Paul Millsap away. They matched up on him, they doubled him and they weren’t going to let Paul beat them tonight – Paul eneded up 6 of 15 with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
• The Mavericks caught every mistake the Jazz made late Burks peaking and Beabois got a layup and Gordon lost Marion for a lay-up
• Burks played his best stint of the season, he played with teammates, he didn’t force the game, he took what the game gave him and he was very good, finishing with 10 points. He also defended very hard.
• Devin Harris had a tough night against his former team 0-7 and his shot was way off he just wasn’t close
• Gordon Hayward took the ball to the rim hard, he played Marion well in the post defensively. Everyone tries to take advantage of him defensively and it doesn’t work.
• After a tough loss right now you find yourself going through every possession and nit picking every time the game could have changed. It takes you away from the big picture which is that the Jazz are building a personality. They are fighters, they are together and they are tough.
• Earl going after Dirk after he went after Derrick Favors is another example of this team taking care of each other.
• Throwing the ball into the crowd is an automatic ejection. Rashard Lewis about 8 years ago threw a ball intended for the basketball standard and missed hitting a women in the crowd and injuring her, since then it has been an automatic ejection.
• Jefferson played very well tonight in the post quickly taking what was given to him.
• Earl Watson played a terrific 25 minutes for the Jazz.
• Yes, I think Dirk should have been ejected for his second technical when he swipped the ball out of the hands of Derrick Favors or for what he called the ref as he left the floor going to the locker-room at the half.
• All of the players in the locker-room talked about the open of the game as were it was lost. The Jazz didn’t come out with enough vigor and Dallas almost immediately went on a 10-0 run.
• Tonight took a lot of fight to stay in the game. That is what is impressive. They also got taught how hard it is to beat the best teams in the NBA.
