The wildly prosperous 1st season of The CFP that is the 4 team rotating playoffs that found Marcus Mariota being taken to the wood shed faster than the spotted owl by a Wherhauser wood products worker and of course Urban Meyer proving he did not need Tim Tebow to win titles. In 2015 The CFP Semis will be played on Dec 31st in the Orange and Cotton Bowls. The fact that ESPN Just paid 470 Million dollars to televise the CFP to the nation and actually drew 33.4 million viewers It is with some consternation that based on post game reports put together by SI and NPR The NCAA really dropped the ball for the 2015 Season. Simply the casual fan will not be tuning in in the non college football mad markets like Boston, and Washington D.C. This becomes a problem for ESPN in terms of the television Ad revenue that can be charged and therefore generated based on what I am sure will be a decline in viewership. Most Americans will be engaging in other forms of distraction on Dec,31st 2015. This is partly due to that the old guard traditionalist types refusal to move The Rose bowl from its traditional 2pm PST Time Slot. This could be a severe miscalculation "The Grandaddy of all errors if you will.. I have a solution starting in 2016 The College football playoffs need to take a page out of the 68 team NCAA MBB tournament and e3xpand to 6 teams. In the Late 1970,s The tournament was composed of only 32 teams. By all accounts not as large as it is today. Given the fact that office pools and the hunger of the sports betting public for more games to place wagers on The March tournament went from 32 to 48 to 64 and with the play in games in Dayton Ohio expanded to 68. teams. This was music to the ears of many smaller schools who would have been shut out by the selection committee. Economic growth is a good thing and needs to be promoted
whenever it can. The NCAA MBB tournament is a great model to follow for 2016. In 2015 declining audience share and ad revenue will cause the NCAA to reverse course and determine that the 2014 ratings and revenue hit were not Just a one hit wonder. On New Years Eve 2015 in the absence of Dick Clark as the NCAA rates the abysmal 2015 record they may calculate they need a more popular hit playoff expansion. The 2014 version drew a 41.3 overnight rating. The college football fan will be quite happy to see expansion weather it plays well in Dayton or Not.
