Empting the Nogin
• This is in a rush as I am on the plane and hoping to get posted before we take off.
• Solid win. These are the nights were the development really takes place.
• Three of the final four play calls of the night were a Gordon Hayward/Derrick Favors side pick and roll. It was off that play that Gordon Hayward rose up to bury the 15 footer that turned out to be the game winner.
• Derrick Favors was terrific. His defense on the final two plays of the game was huge. He came over to help on the Louis Williams drive and forced the miss and then stepped out on the Louis Williams three attempt at the end of the game.
• Favors had a career high points and his 5th double double of his career and his first ever 20/10. I feel pretty comfortable that he will have many more before it is all over.
• In fact, it was only the third time he ever had played more than 30 minutes.
• Tyrone Corbin had a really good night. In the first quarter guys got exhausted and he shorten the rotation in the third quarter and altered who he played in the third.
• Corbin’s 1st quarter benching of Devin Harris sent a huge message. Harris came out for the 2nd quarter like a ball of fire. The only way this works is if Earl Watson plays well and he did.
• Gordon Hayward really held his own on Andre Iguodola tonight. Iggy tried to go after Gordon time and time again and Hayward not only held his own but generally denied him each and every time.
• Enes Kanter did it again. The kid is playing like he belongs. He is holding his own each night and each time he does it he is making progress. I am stunned at what he was done in the first three games of the year.
• Paul was just 4 of 16 but the effort stayed consistent all night
• The ball moved very well tonight even if the assist numbers weren’t great.
• Barring anything crazy I think Gordon Hayward is going to lead this team in minutes played this year.
• Defensive rebounding was awesome tonight – 32 of 39 chances – 82% percent – that is outstanding. League average is about 72%.
• Interesting thing on the plane tonight is the guys now have apps on their I-Pads so they can watch film on the plane.

The Panic Button in Los Angeles The Breeze Vol1 Number 29
The shortened NBA Season has started 1-2 for the new look Lakers. The Spoiled fan base that stretches across the state and around the USA needs to understand some basic things that will help them as they go through a transitional year as a franchise. Dr. Jerry Buss who by academic trade has his doctoral degree in Physical Chemistry has owned the Lakers since 1979 ushering in a new era of basketball in Los Angeles that up to that time has never been seen in Los Angeles Basketball history. He purchased the Lakers , Kings, and the Great Western Forum for 67.5 million dollars in 1979. Now 32 seasons later the Lakers find themselves coached by a 41 year-old coach who has had some success in the leauge compiling a 272-138 record as coach of Cleveland. It is worth noting that his strength is defense and not offense. In terms Laker fans know well show time has now become slow time for the Laker offense that is void of youth and direction @ the gaurd position. Derek Fisher is looking like he needs help to the nearest Social Security office to start collecting retirement My grandmother who is 86 years old could beat him off the dribble and she is unable to go to her left. The Geriatric Fisher may be a great negotiater of labor peace but to be sure he can no longer negotiate the 94X50 hunk of wood that lies between both baskets these days. A few reasons the Lakers will not be as appealing as they have been in recent years 1. Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchack have taken the riegns of the team and weather for ego or personal reasons Jim Buss has made it his personal mission to intentionally
disassociate himself from the regime of his father as if to say I can do better than my Physical Chemistry Doctoral Patriarch father many of the long time employees of the organization were let go during the lockout .

Jazz season Preview David Locke Jazz PXP man
Tuesday night will be the premiere of Utah Jazz 4.0. The departure of free agent Andrei Kirilenko and the trade of Memo Okur were the final steps in a 18 month process closing out Utah Jazz 3.0.
In 1979, the Utah Jazz came to Salt Lake. An ABA city got its first taste of the NBA. After a few years of Tom Nissalke, Ben Poquette and Alan Bristow the Jazz fans were introduced to its first group of stars, Adrian Dantley, Ricky Green, Darrell Griffith and Frank Layden. Jazz 1.0 built brought legitimacy to the NBA in Salt Lake and legitimacy to Salt Lake. After early highlights of Alan Bristow punching out Larry Bird and the Whopper Billy Paultz’s right hook, Jazz 1.0 had a connection between city and team that would soon be unprecedented in the NBA.
Jazz 1.0 capped off its run with the 1987-88 7 game series with the Hall of Fame laden Los Angeles Lakers. 1.0 ended shortly thereafter. Frank Layden suddenly resigned turning the franchise over to his trusted assistant Jerry Sloan. It was the culmination of process that had been taking place for a few years. A power forward from Louisiana Tech replaced the previous all-star Adrian Dantley. The fresh eyed competitor John Stockton supplemented the fastest of them all Ricky Green as the point guard.
Utah Jazz 2.0 was first born in 1985 when Larry H. Miller bought 50% of the team from Sam Battistone and then on June 16, 1986 when Larry H. Miller purchased the rest of the organization.
2.0 started a bit slow with first round exits in 89 and 90. The consistency of the organization and loyalty of the fan base allowed 2.0 to have great success. Starting in 1991, when the Jazz made the Western Conference Finals. Subtle updates Tyrone Corbin, Jeff Hornacek, and Antoine Carr moved the Jazz into a new stratosphere. The Jazz still at the core were Stockton, Malone and Sloan (Hot Rod deserves part of it also). Finally, they were able to crest the Western Conference and make its two finals appearances. The Utah Jazz were officially Utah’s favorite. Salt Lake City was a Jazz town and the nation took envious notice.
All great things must come to an end and when John Stockton retired from basketball in 2003, Utah Jazz 2.0 was obsolete.
The beginnings of Utah Jazz 3.0 were raw and limited, but at the helm was the same master as 2.0, Jerry Sloan. The fan base embraced 3.0, it was built on grit and desire. Utah Jazz 3.0 didn’t start with much to sell other than a raw energetic 22 year old Andrei Kirilenko.
Applications were added, Deron Williams, Memo Okur and Carlos Boozer and Utah Jazz 3.0 was back into the Western Conference Finals within 3 years. Memo was hitting huge three’s in Houston. Carlos Boozer was dominating Yao Ming, Deron avenging a breakout by Baron Davis to dominate the series and Bolerjack was telling you to buckle up for another ride. It was an unheard of ride back to prominence. The bubble didn’t last and 3.0 would never make it over the summit.
Looking back Utah Jazz 3.0 very well may have been the 2nd best team in basketball, but the best was in LA and stared them down in the playoffs each and every time.
Unlike Utah Jazz 2.0 that lived at the top of their game without distractions or dips for over 15 year, Utah Jazz 3.0 took a much more natural business cycle and crashed in 2010 7 years after it had been launched.
The end of Utah Jazz 3.0 started with the torn Achilles of Memo Okur in Denver playoff series. Utah Jazz 3.0 greatest moment may have the fight and determination it showed to blast the Denver Nuggets out of the first round before once again falling to hated Los Angeles Lakers.
3.0’s expiration was intensified with the departure of Carlos Boozer only to come to a crashing halt the night Jerry Sloan retired after losing to Boozer’s new team. With the Jazz stock prices dropping to all-time lows the Jazz ended 3.0 with the trade of Deron Williams.
Tuesday night we embark on Utah Jazz 4.0. It is the next era in 32 years of Utah Jazz Basketball.
Pieces have been acquired for the 4.0, starting with a winner from the heart of basketball, Gordon Hayward. Hayward took a no name school to the final second of the NCAA National Championship against the giant of college basketball, Duke. Now as the oldest of the “youngsters”(21) he embarks on his second season in the NBA.
Next is a gift from the basketball god’s 6’10 unbelievably gifted Derrick Favors, who for the first time in 3 years gets to unpack and be established. Consider at 20 we were still two years away from meeting Karl Malone. Favors will do his learning and excelling all as a part of 4.0.
The newest addition is highlighted by an import. A Turkish teenager who was so desperate to play in the NBA he left his homeland and parents at 17 to become a part of the most storied college basketball program in the US, Kentucky. Then that hope was denied by the ruling body of the NCAA. Finally, after 2 years of waiting the 19 year old, Enes Kanter, is dropped into the middle of a man’s game and with endless effort and joy doing everything he can to hold his own.
The final piece is an overlooked kid from Missouri who has proven ever doubter wrong, Alec Burks. While every other Missouri state star was getting recruited Burks while going unnoticed just keep winning all the way to the Missouri State Player of the Year. With one and only one scholarship in hand Burks stayed in Big 12 country with a chip on his shoulder. At the end of his freshman year at Colorado, he was the Big 12 Rookie of the Year, averaging 17 pts and 5 rebs and a Freshman All-American. Two years later he was the #12 pick of the NBA draft again with doubters wondering if he could shot at the NBA level. Each night he has a message for those doubters.
It is these four pieces along with the hard working Al Jefferson, the overachieving Paul Millsap and a cast of others that leads the Jazz into the new era, Utah Jazz 4.0.
4.0 is different than the other eras. We embarked upon 1.0 with ignorance and bliss. 2.0 was our first taste of greatness, one to never be equaled. 3.0 started with a dearth of talent only to bring in hired guns for the 1st time.
Now with a new CEO in charge, Greg Miller, a new coach, Tyrone Corbin and characters younger than we have ever seen before 4.0 gets under way.
On a personal level, it is incredibly exciting to embark on this journey with you. This is our team, Utah’s team. It comes to us in a new era. Where the players are also @Gordonhayward, @alecburks10 and @dfavors14, an era where we know a little more about each of these guys and what they do. We learn more about what makes them tick and what drives them to greatness. We are closer to this group with the advent of new technology then we were in the past era’s.
At the end of this era, we will have met them younger, known them better and learned more about them and probably ourselves than we did in the past. It will be quite a ride. Not always an easy one, but one that will only intensify the relationship between this state and its team.

Memeo Okur traded to the Nets for a second round Pick
Today the Utah Jazz traded Memo Okur to the New Jersey Nets for a 2nd round draft pick and a trade exception. The Jazz made this trade for both numerous reasons.
From a pure money standpoint it saves 10.5 million dollars this season for the Utah Jazz.
From a flexibility standpoint, it opens up the Jazz to numerous moves across the NBA. The Jazz now sit around 51 million of salary cap allowing them to sign a free agent, re-sign Andrei Kirilenko without any threat of going over luxury tax at 70 million.

To repress worship is to repress the irrepressible.
Everyone is a worshipper. Every person has his or her God: The only difference is that some can defend what they believe with sound reasons while others do so in a vacuum. Not only individuals but nations have their gods.
I am an Indian, born and raised in India. Before I moved to the West I readily accepted the fact that during Hindu festivals the nation would be celebrating the occasion. This was understood, even though technically India is a secular democracy. But there is an underlying worldview behind the culture. Whether it was Ganesh puja or Diwali, India celebrates its festivals based in a Hindu worldview.
I am not a Hindu but I respect the Hindu's right to express the foundational ideas of the nation. The same applies to a Buddhist nation or to an Islamic nation. I am neither a Buddhist nor a Muslim. But I respect the right of those in these countries to express their faith during their festivals and am not offended by them.
I am a Christian. When I came to America decades ago, I was thrilled to see Christmas celebrated and the reason for the season so obvious: the birth of Jesus Christ. Did I assume that every American was thus a Christian? Certainly not. But I expected the charitable heart of even the dissenter to allow that which has been practiced in this country historically and traditionally to continue. But alas, it is not so. In Thailand and Indonesia Christmas carols are sung in shopping centers and Christmas trees adorn airports. But in America the anti-Christian bias of silly advertisements like Bloomingdales’ "Merry, Happy, Love, Peace" reflect ideas firmly planted in midair and proclaim no reason for the season.
Who is offended by a public celebration of Christmas? The anti-Christian secularist who lives under the illusion that values are cradled in a vacuum. Peace and love for what? What do these terms really mean? Are they self-evident? Not by any means.
America may not be a Christian nation per se, but only the Judeo-Christian worldview could have framed such a nation's ideas and values: "All men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights." No other religion or secular assumption can affirm such a statement except the Judeo-Christian worldview. But today that very worldview on which our systems of government and law are based is expelled from the marketplace.
Democracies that are unhinged from all sacred moorings ultimately sink under the brute weight of conflicting egos. Freedom is destroyed not just by its retraction, but more often by its abuse.
Is it not odd that whenever it has power, liberalism is anything but liberal, both in the area of religion and politics? We now have something called “spirituality” because people don't like the word “religion.” What does spirituality mean? It means you may believe anything you wish to believe but regarding ultimate things, "No absolutes, please." The relativism and spirituality with which our society lives have one thing in common: they are both sophisticated ways of self-worship.
It is not accidental that even as Christian values have been jettisoned, the world is economically and morally on the verge of bankruptcy. Oh, but Jesus' name still surfaces in the West. Maybe more often than any other name. Why? Because profanity still reigns. Oh yes, and God still figures in our philosophy: even when “Mother Earth” quakes and thousands die, we still blame “Father God.” The banishment of Christmas may be the anti-theists’ great longing. But they still want the gifts of Christmas—love, joy, peace and reason. Malcolm Muggeridge once opined that we have educated ourselves into imbecility.
What are we celebrating at Christmas? What is the message of Christmas? It is the birth of the One who promised peace, joy and love. Try as we will, we cannot realize such values without acknowledging the point of reference for these absolutes: the very person of God and his gift to us of a changed heart and will. That message needs to be heard around our world that is reeling with problems and rife with hate. For we have proven we are not fit to be God.
G.K. Chesterton was right: "The problem with Christianity is not that it has been tried and found wanting, but that it has been found difficult and left untried."
Some years ago, I walked into the Forbidden City in Beijing. It was a cold and grey January. I paused as I saw deep inside its walls a shop with the banner still fluttering, “Merry Christmas.” That which was happily displayed in the Forbidden City is now all but forbidden in our cities. A Chinese professor once remarked to me, “You Christians need to thank God for Communism, because we left the souls of our people empty, making room for the gospel.”
Maybe someday we will thank the rabid secularists as well, when Merry Christmas will no longer be forbidden in our cities. Exhausted and disappointed in self-worship, we may turn to God again and hear his story afresh.

Jazz PXP Man David Locke Utahs Preseason win over Portland

• Big picture I have the same feeling as I did leaving Portland, it is pre-season , no one is game planning, no one is exploiting your weakness, everyone is just playing their game regardless of opponent so it is hard to really take a lot away from the night.
• The Jazz played much better defensively. The rotations in the half court were superior to what they were on Monday night. The transition defense was abysmal early in the game and they improved greatly with that as the game went on.
• The rookies defended well, Kanter played well in the post against LaMarcus Aldridge late in the game. Realize LA has not practiced more than one or twice and was not at full strength, but he is so skilled it was good for Kanter to hold his own.
• The fact that Kanter is 19 years old hasn’t played in 2 years and is not making a complete fool of himself is a really good sign about his talent level. He is a superior rebounder. When I watched the film of him this is how I opened my draft breakdown of Kanter “This is an NBA player. His elite skill is rebounding. He is going to be a big time rebounder in the NBA. My guess is a 10 rebound a night player if he gets time”
• Burks also battled defensively far better than I ever saw from him on his college tapes. He actually had an impressive 0 for 8 night. He is going to struggle in how he is going to score, and how he is going to have to play off contact. This will take him time and he will figure it out.
• Favors and Hayward reminded us tonight that they are both in the middle of a process. I have a feeling I will write this a tremendous amount.
• I liked that Ty Corbin had a design on how to get players minutes and stuck to it.
• The players not playing and icing is what they do after every game immediately following a game so they did it on the bench because it is important to do it immediately, nothing more significant than that.
• What jumped out to me about the Jazz tonight is how slim the difference in this line-up is from 1 to 14. Paul Millsap may be the best player on the team, which is not a good thing, and he is just not that much better than the 11th guy on the roster. Who is the 13th guy on the roster and how does he compare to the 4th best player. The margin is almost non-existent.
• The above situation is going to make Tyrone Corbin’s life very difficult.
• Josh Howard has the ability to beat people 1 on 1 and this roster is pretty void of that. He will be important
• CJ Miles first half was great and his second half wasn’t. His career in a capsule.
• Phil Johnson is awesome on the radio, you have to listen to it.
• He talked about the timing of the offense and how it is to learn and how they still have to get the ball inside, the offense is predicated on paint touches.
• LA is next.

Before we get started, remember it's only one game and a preseason game at that. On the same note, there is only one more preseason game prior to the games counting for real. So what do we take from the 110 - 90 loss?

Wow! Can you call it a statement? Not sure, but 25 and 12 is impressive. Even more so when you consider it came on 10 of 15 shooting. The odd thing to me was that I didn't even realize that he was having that big of a game until Boler mentioned it on the broadcast. Not to mention that Favors had the second best +/- of any Jazz player tonight with a -1 (Evans was a +3) Favors development and potential to explode may be closer than we think.
(That brings in a whole different conversation. Does that mean he starts over Milsap? It'll be curious to see what lineup Ty Corbin goes with on Wednesday. If Favors backs up 25/12 with another big game it may be hard to not put him in the starting lineup.)
Enes Kanter
Kanter only had 6 points on 1 of 7 shooting, but he was 4 for 4 from the free throw line. This coupled with his ability to just gobble up boards (10 tonight) makes him a viable piece of the big man puzzle this year even if it is only 5 - 10 minutes a night.
I was really impressed that Kanter seemed more comfortable tonight than he did Saturday at the scrimmage. Not sure what that means, but I think it's a good thing.
Alec Burks
Burks numbers on the night weren't great, and he made plenty of rookie mistakes. But that's just it! Burks wasn't afraid to make the mistakes. He wasn't tentative. In short, he didn't play like a rookie. Burks was not afraid to drive, shoot or make a mistake. This is the way he'll learn. You've got to love his confidence.
Ty's Sense of Urgency
Corbin's post game comments of there is no time to lose is backed up with him not giving the team the day off tomorrow. Games count for real next week.
Play Ball
Maybe the biggest positive tonight was doing a pregame show with +Scott Garrard and Tom Nissalke, watching the game on Root Sports, hearing Boler and Harpring's back and forth, hearing+David Locke and Ron Boone break things down during their broadcast and following the highs and lows of the Jazz fans thoughts on the #UTAatPOR twitter stream. In short, it's good to be back.
Negatives
Starting Lineup
Many of you on the #UTAatPOR twitter stream were very frustrated with the play of the starting lineup (or veterans). Frankly, you should be. I'm not going to single any one or two guys out, it was a collective group effort.
It was disappointing after hearing all of the positive comments coming out of practices that that was the first effort we got to see. Maybe the most disappointing thing was to see guys revert to how they played last year after Portland punched them in the mouth early.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that is not the starting lineup we will see come the 27th vs the Lakers, or even on Wednesday.
Defense Still Lacking
The Jazz not only gave up 110 points, but also allowed Portland to shoot just under 56% in doing so. At times guys were so late on rotations that the Blazers had time to chat with members of the crowd prior to shooting the corner 3.
I get that this is a new defense, but as stated before, there is not a lot of time to get this thing hammered out.
Final Thought
I'm sure that Ty Corbin will change up the starting lineup for Wednesday's game. Here's the starting 5 I'd like to see on Wednesday.
Devin Harris, Raja Bell, Gordon Hayward, Derrick Favors and Al Jefferson.
When I tweeted this out after the game (@benbags) I got a lot of negative reaction on putting Raja in the starting lineup. I've been as critical of Bell's game as the next guy, but I like Raja and what he can bring to this starting 5. Especially if he brings a bit of nastiness. We'll extend this conversation tomorrow on Powerhouse.

Before we get started, remember it's only one game and a preseason game at that. On the same note, there is only one more preseason game prior to the games counting for real. So what do we take from the 110 - 90 loss?
Positives -

Wow! Can you call it a statement? Not sure, but 25 and 12 is impressive. Even more so when you consider it came on 10 of 15 shooting. Last night I learned the Andrei Kirilenko's asking price on the market was a 4 year deal around 9 million per year. The Sacramento Kings according to people in the NBA have been floating around 8 million a year for Kirilenko.
The crazy thing that is going on is that players are expecting the last year on the contract knowing they might be bought out. For the Utah Jazz writing a 9 million plus check for non performance is not in the cards.
Considering the injuries, the amount of time AK has been playing pro ball it is hard to believe the Jazz are about to get anywhere close to the numbers being talked about. Honestly, no one may be hitting those numbers or he would be signed by now.
AK's time in Utah has been remember for the injuries. In the last few years, he was incapable of playing extended stretches of games before something in his body would break down. The magic number was usually around 20 to 25 games in a row.
However, what can't be lost is his value. When AK was healthy enough to play 20 minutes or more since 2007 the Jazz were 144-87 (62%), when he played but was only able to give under 20 minutes the Jazz were 15-15 (50%) and when he didn't play at all the Jazz were 35-32.
Overall, if AK played over 20 minutes to the Jazz won 62% of the time and when he didn't they won at just 51.5%.
It is undeniable on both ends of the spectrum his play correlated to winning as much as any player on the roster and we found out about that way too often.
Bottom line on AK, of the available nearly 20,000 minutes of a teams play in a season he has not been capable of playing more than 10%. He should be rewarded for his influence on the game, but his pay must represent what he is actually capable of delivering.
Since the market hasn't bit on his opening ask, his value maybe heading more to its appropriate realm.
For the Jazz, they found it hard to win without him when they he was surrounded by stars, his lose would make wins even tougher to come by with a developing team.

The true thesis of “Moneyball” is finding something that is undervalued. In the case of Billy Beane in Michael Lewis great book it had to do with on base percentage and later evolved to defense.
Kevin O’Connor is playing his own game of “Moneyball.” For O’Connor it is finding a player who a year or two ago who was worth 2 to 3 times what he is worth now and seeing if you can get undervalued talent who performs to his previous level.
Last year it was Raja Bell and this year is Josh Howard (who has not signed). For Raja Bell year 1 of money ball was a failure, but the book is not closed on the attempt yet. As is the case with moneyball it may not be an equation that hits every time, but if you hit 1 out 3 you are fine and 1 out of 2 you are rolling.
In 2008-09 Josh Howard was averaging 18 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assist a game. He was shooting 45% from the field going to the line 4 times a game and knocking down 34.5% from three.
It was this performance that made him a 10 million dollar a year player. Now after a slew of injuries and diminishing performances his market value has dipped to an all time low. Is he done at 31 years old? Have the injuries eliminated his effectiveness as a player? Or could he return to 80% of the player he once was for 20% of the price. That is moneyball the NBA way.

He was a 5 million dollar a year player at the time and would have surpassed that if he were a free agent. Instead, injuries eliminated his next year in the NBA and his market dropped out. O’Connor pushed by the Lakers increasing the market paid $3 million for what was once a $5 to $8 million dollar talent.
The results of last season would say that the Moneyball grab on Raja Bell was a failure. Early signs in this year’s camp are that Raja has returned to his 08-09 form but only time will tell.

Fox, 28 (turns 29 Dec. 4), spent last season with AAA Pawtucket in the Boston organization. He went 10-4 with a 3.96 ERA (57 ER, 129.2 IP) in 28 appearances (21 starts). The right-hander pitched briefly in the Majors in 2010 with the Twins and Red Sox, going 0-0, 4.91 (4 ER, 7.1 IP) in 4 appearances (1 start). A former All-American at the University of Central Florida, Fox has a career minor league record of 45-32 with a 3.76 ERA in 173 appearances (101 starts). He was originally selected by Minnesota in the supplemental first round of the 2004 June draft (35th overall).
Garrison, 25, made his Major League debut with the Yankees last season, recording 0.2 scoreless innings vs. the Mariners on July 25. He spent the bulk of his 2011 season with AA Trenton, going 4-8 with a 5.95 ERA (50 ER, 571.1 IP) in 17 appearances (16 starts). In seven minor league seasons in the Brewers, Padres and Yankees farm systems, the left-hander has combined to go 33-36 with 3 saves and a 4.06 ERA (258 ER, 571.1 IP). He was originally selected by Milwaukee in the 10th round of the 2005 June draft.
Grube, 30, returns for his third season in the Mariners organization. The right-hander split the 2011 season between AA Jackson and AAA Tacoma, combining to go 9-6 with a 3.88 ERA (62 ER, 144.0 IP) in 28 games (21 starts). He is currently pitching for Lara in the Venezuelan Winter League, where he is 1-0 with a 3.97 ERA (10 ER, 22.2 IP) in 6 starts. He was originally selected by Colorado in the 10th round of the 2004 June draft out of the University of Memphis.
Henn, 30, went 3-2 with a 2.79 ERA (19 ER, 61.1 IP) in 43 relief appearances for AAA Las Vegas in the Toronto organization last season. He has made 60 career Major League appearances with the Yankees (2005-07), Padres (2008) and Twins (2009). The left-hander was originally selected by the Yankees in the 26th round of the 2000 June draft.
Kinney, 32, pitched last season in the Chicago White Sox organization. He went 6-3 with 14 saves and a 2.77 ERA (19 ER, 61.2 IP) in 49 appearances with AAA Charlotte. He also saw action in 13 games with the White Sox. From 2006-09, Kinney appeared in 45 games out of the bullpen for St. Louis, including 7 appearances during the 2006 postseason when the Cardinals won the World Series.
Marquez, 27, split the 2011 season between the White Sox and Yankees organizations. He posted a 2.25 ERA (1 ER, 4.0 IP) in 3 appearances with the Yankees. He spent two months on the 60-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation. In 18 minor league starts, he combined to go 6-5 with a 3.71 ERA (35 ER, 85.0 IP). He was originally selected by the Yankees in the supplemental first round (41st overall) in the 2004 June draft.
Patterson, 32, re-signs with the Mariners after playing for AAA Tacoma and AA Jackson over the last two seasons. The 6-7 right-hander combined to go 4-4 with 19 saves in 52 relief appearances last season. He also pitched for Team USA in the 2011 Pan Am Games and World Cup, earning 3 saves and posting a 1.29 ERA (1 ER, 7.0 IP) in 8 appearances. In 10 minor league seasons, Patterson has combined for 72 saves and a 3.21 ERA in 388 appearances. He made his Major League debut appearing 4 games for the Yankees (1 G) and Padres (3 G) in 2008.
Quiroz, 30, is no stranger to the Mariners organization, appearing in 7 Major League games with the Mariners in three different seasons (2006, 2009-10). He played last season for AAA Tucson in the San Diego farm system, batting .240 (60x278) with 5 home runs and 44 RBI in 76 games.
Rodriguez, 31, returns for his second season in the Mariners organization. The switch-hitter appeared in 44 games with Seattle at four positions in 2011 (SS, 3B, 2B, 1B). He had a pair of walk-off hits, Sept. 14 vs. the Yankees (HR) and April 11 vs. the Blue Jays (2B). Rodriguez has appeared in 407 career games in six Major League seasons with the Twins (2005-07), Padres (2008-09) and Mariners.
Valiquette, 24, did not pitch last season with a back injury. He signed with the Mariners as a minor league free agent on Aug. 23 when the Cincinnati Reds released him off the 40-man roster. In six minor league seasons in the Reds organization, the hard-throwing left-hander went 18-19 with a 4.50 ERA and 284 strikeouts in 201 appearances (28 starts). The native of Montreal, Quebec, Canada was originally selected by the Reds in the 7th round of the 2004 June draft.
